Earlier this year the only union targetting at IBM employees Alliance @ IBM union announced that it would cease operations. A declining membership to around two hundred was given as an important reason. Alliance @ IBM started organizing protests in 1999 when IBM started moving jobs more and more to lower-cost countries.

Since 2010 IBM has not been very clear about the amount of people it employs. The financial results of the company also have been under pressure. In 2015 IBM went through a massive restructure and reduced the global workforce by 6,500.

In particular, older workers witness the changes with sorrow. One of them expresses himself as follows in a comment on an article on The Register, an independent online magazine about the IT industry:

"There was a time ... when I believed that it would be good to have IBM on your resume. After my time there I'm not so sure."
